Deforestation
Global forest cover has been reduced by 20% since the industrial revolution. The amount, worldwide, of temperate forest area has recently stabilized but this is misleading since the conversion of virgin forest to plantation continues unabated, particularly in Russia. Tropical forest areas are being deforested at a rate of nearly 50,000 square miles per year.

Monocropping
The desire for food products in developed countries that look and feel a certain way has led farmers to plant specific types of crops rather than a diversified lot. This procedure, known as monocropping, is very chemical intensive. Monocropping also raises problems because farmers who practice the technique often remove large patches of trees and leave land fallow for a shorter duration.
