UNITED NATIONS, Jan. 9 (UPI) — Fashion leaders are heeding a call to reform the clothing and cosmetics industries to help preserve biodiversity, United Nations officials say.

The “eco-fashionistas,” who include the leaders of such labels as Edun, Noir, Ciel, and Kumvana Gomani, will contribute garments and accessories from their latest collections to a U.N.-sponsored “EcoChic” fashion show to be held in Geneva, Switzerland, Jan. 20-21, the U.N. Conference on Trade and Development said in a release Friday.

Officials said the launch is meant to celebrate sustainable fashion and will feature donations by designers from around the world, including Diane Von Furstenberg, Manish Arora, Bora Aksu, and Thakoon.

The issues include over-harvesting of wild species for their skins to the pollution caused by manufacturing processes used in clothing and cosmetics industries.

It’s part of a call by the U.N. General Assembly for ethical action by producers and consumers against the rapid loss of the world’s species as part of the International Year of Biodiversity, officials said.
