ROCHESTER, N.Y., Aug. 4 (UPI) — Red is often considered a sexy color for women to wear but women are attracted to men wearing red, as opposed to other colors, a U.S. researcher says.
Andrew Elliot of the University of Rochester in New York and University of Munich in Germany says although red means different things in different cultures — the study was conducted in the United States, England, Germany and China — the finding showed women, but not men, were drawn to men in red consistently.
“Red is typically thought of as a sexy color for women only,” Elliot said in a statement.
In the study, a group of men and women briefly viewed a black-and-white photo of a Caucasian man in a polo shirt, surrounded by a red or white matte and were asked about his attractiveness.
In another experiment, a group of 55 women were shown a man in a color photo, dressed in either a red or a green shirt. The women said the man dressed in red was more desirable to have sex with.
In a follow-up study, women said men wearing red T-shirts were more likely to have higher status than men wearing the blue T-shirts.
