ULAN BATOR, Mongolia, March 29 (UPI) — Bitter cold weather continued to linger over Mongolia Monday and relief officials called for increased aid to families whose livestock herds have been hit hard.
The BBC said Monday the brutal winter came on the heels of a dry summer that reduced the amount of fodder that could be put into storage.
The situation has resulted in the deaths of thousands of animals and an appeal by the International Red Cross for around $900,000 for relief efforts.
As many as 3,000 Mongolian families have lost the bulk of their herds, the Red Cross said.
