WAALWIJK, Netherlands, June 18 (UPI) — A new type of carpet not only softens footsteps but helps clean the air as well, officials of a carpet maker in the Netherlands said.
Desso says its new carpet, the AirMaster, significantly reduces the amount of dust and particulate matter floating in the air. The carpet, based in patented technology, is designed to trap a higher percentage of dust particles than conventional carpet and flooring.
Independent tests by GUI, the German test institute, confirmed that AirMaster is eight times more effective in capturing and retaining fine dust than hard flooring, and four times more effective than standard carpeting, officials from Desso said.
The tests found AirMaster released 80 percent of trapped dust during vacuum cleaning — a 16 percent improvement compared to standard carpet — and as a result, the AirMaster was certified with a Gold logo from GUI, awarded when dust retention efficiency exceeds 80 percent.
AirMaster reduces the incidence of harmful allergy-producing particles by trapping and immobilizing them in the carpet, producing a significant improvement in indoor air quality and reducing the risk of health-related problems such as asthma, Desso officials said.
