HOLLYWOOD, Fla., Aug. 6 (UPI) — Lifeguards in Hollywood, Fla., were urging beach goers to stay out of the water at a city beach Friday after high bacteria levels were found, authorities say.
A recording on the city’s Beach Safety Division telephone line said a two-block section of beach was affected, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported.
“If you do come to the beach today, please sit by an occupied lifeguard tower,” the recording said. “Ask our personnel; they’ll be happy to answer any of your questions.”
Levels of bacteria in samples of beach water collected from the site were higher than what the state considers safe, the Broward County Health Department said.
The bacteria could cause swimming-related gastroenteritis, officials said.
