Activists Fight Government Food Policies

NEW YORK, April 20 (UPI) — A U.S. group identifying itself as a grassroots coalition says it provides a voice for those who oppose government efforts to restrict food choices.

Orit Sklar, national spokeswoman of My Food My Choice, said the group is an online community aimed at fighting attacks on individuals’ rights to make meal decisions.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and other elected officials have implemented bans on trans fats, proposed beverage taxes and a salt ban, Sklar said.

“This is a demonstration of pure power with no wisdom. There is no evidence that these sweeping bans will improve health. Yet, it is certain that these policies will threaten restaurants, particularly small ethnic establishments, discourage tourism and allow government vast powers over the lives of citizens,” Sklar said in a statement.

Sklar said the Bloomberg administration is “purposely crippling the restaurant industry in New York.”
