MIAMI, Oct. 19 (UPI) — Hurricane Rick was downgraded to a Category 3 storm Monday but remained a powerful hurricane as it moved toward Mexico’s Pacific coast, authorities said.
The hurricane had the potential to cause dangerous surf conditions along Mexico’s Baja Peninsula, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said.
Early Monday morning, maximum sustained winds had decreased to about 125 miles per hour with higher gusts, center officials said.
“Although additional weakening is forecast during the next day or so, Rick is still expected to be a dangerous hurricane as it approaches the southern Baja Peninsula,” forecasters said. “Interests in western Mexico, should monitor the progress of this hurricane.”
