Community Effort Lowers Stroke Rate

QUEBEC CITY, June 10 (UPI) — Community-based programs to lower blood pressure successfully reduced cardiovascular disease in Canada, researchers say.

The community-based Cardiovascular Health Awareness Program significantly reduced both heart disease and stroke in seniors, the study found.

Researchers randomly selected 39 mid-size communities and stratified them by location and population size. Twenty communities received CHAP and the other 19 communities served as controls.

In the CHAP communities, doctors asked patients to meet at pharmacies with volunteers to check blood pressure, review the warning signs of stroke and heart attack, look at risk factors and promote blood pressure control and healthy living.

More than 15,000 residents and 500 peer volunteers took part in the program.

“Volunteer-led risk assessments combined with health information and linkages to primary care providers and community resources led to an impressive 9 percent reduction in their rates of hospitalization for stroke, heart attack, and congestive heart failure,” Dr. Janusz Kaczorowski of the University of British Columbia and the Child and Family Research Institute said in a statement.

The study was presented by Kaczorowski at the Canadian Stroke Congress in Quebec City.

Don't Expect Partners to Do What You Won't

NEW YORK, May 27 (UPI) — The key to creating and maintaining relationships is you — not your partner, a U.S. psychology author advises.

Anthony O. Nwachukwu, author of “Keeping Human Relationships Together: Self Guide to Healthy Living Studies in Spiritual Psychology vis-a-vis Human Values” — which he describes as a guide for supervising oneself to create and maintain fulfilling relationships — suggests beginning “spiritual psychology” by not blaming current and potential partners, but by having people search inside themselves.

“You can’t expect your partner to be honest when you are selfish and greedy, or to keep an honest relationship with a person you deceive,” Nwachukwu says in a statement.

“It is one thing to tell an unreliable husband to stop deceiving himself, his wife or family, but another to find out why he has such a bad habit and to give him the skills he needs to heal his problem from its root.”

Nwachukwu, who is also a Roman Catholic clergyman, says his insights are based on systematically developed and tested surveys he conducted in West Africa and the United States.

Federal Agents Seize 77 Ozone Generating Medical Devices at Request of FDA

WASHINGTON, Feb. 1 (UPI) — Federal marshals, at the request of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, have seized 77 ozone generators because they had not been proved safe or effective.

The FDA said the generators, models AOS-1M and AOS-1MD valued at $75,000, were seized from Applied Ozone Systems of Auburn, Calif.

FDA inspectors said the medical devices were said to treat cancer, AIDS, hepatitis, herpes and other diseases and conditions, but were produced under poor manufacturing conditions and posed public health risk

“The FDA advises healthcare professionals and consumers to discontinue use of these devices … (because) the FDA has not determined that the seized products are safe and effective in treating the diseases or conditions, and officials at Applied Ozone Systems never responded to a Dec. 21, 2009, FDA request for a voluntary recall of these ozone generators.

“In addition, the agency is concerned that patients who use these AOS ozone devices as directed by the manufacturer may believe that ozone therapy serves as an appropriate treatment and as a result delay or stop conventional or prescribed effective treatment.” officials said. “There is also a risk of infection from potential contamination of the applicator or catheter.”

Ozone generators are devices that produce ozone from oxygen. FDA officials said administration methods suggested by the manufacturer of the seized generators include using a catheter to blow ozonized air into rectal and vaginal areas.
