MAGDALENA CONTRERAS, Mexico, Sept. 16 (UPI) — Three people, including two children, died in a mudslide near rain-soaked Mexico City, official media said Wednesday.
The Notimex news agency said a saturated hill collapsed Tuesday on group of homes that had been built illegally in the town of Magdalena Contreras.
Local officials said heavy rains Tuesday afternoon and evening caused the hill’s soil to soften, triggering a mudslide that covered about 1,600 square feet. Two girls, ages 6 and 11, were killed inside one of the illegal homes, which was struck by a tree and destroyed, Notimex said.
Also killed in the home was an adult, identified as Joseph Francisco Sandiego.
The district’s attorney general has opened an investigation into the building of the homes, the news agency said.
