I am working on a new plantation project in Belize and was wondering if anyone on the forum has any information (or links) to the historic price and current market price of

- Mahogany
- Spanish Cedar
- Teak
- Gmelina arborea

Hi Chris again - I would suggest asking for the prices local in Belize unless you have the ability (and desire) to sell internationally. A forestry engineer can get those prices for you.

I have the prices for Costa Rica if you are interested - but I would hate for you to build a plantation based on those prices since Costa Rica is in the middle of a building boom which is driving the price of wood up rapidly.

Gmelina grows very fast - but is practically worthless on the stump.

I was thinking of export prices.  Locally (Belize) it is .44c US on Hardwoords board foot, $1.20 on Mahogany and Cedar.  But the govern't is forcing the prices down by limiting export to plantation and managed forests.  Thus the local market buys the wood cheap and can export finished products.   Gmelina would be for the local market which is just a bit above hard-wood.  I was thinking of using it as a quick return to cover the longer expenses of the mahogany.

Do you have any international prices on the woods?  Just the general price for good wood (excluding the high-end grain and low-end knotted stuff)

Chris

These are not stumpage (i.e. still in the field prices) but the price I get for boards, I don't sell stumpage. It is rough cut lumber, 1x6 etc. Beams are more and so are slabs.

Semi-Duro (Laurel for example) 1.50 USD per BF
Duro (common - teak, guanacaste, etc.) 2.00 USD per BF
Fine (Mahogany, etc) - whatever I ask, very rare here, 4.00 USD and up.

Teak in the field goes for a maximum of 200 colones per pulgada (0.20 per BF) for young teak - older teak can go for as much as $1.25 per BF in the field.

Prices have risen 30% in the last 2 years down here.

Formalata (wood used for concrete forms - and species) goes for $0.50 per BF rough cut.
