Is there a defined window in the calendar year when you plant the teak trees? I'm not aware of Costa Rica having seasons as I know them. You do have a rain season and a dry season if I'm not mistaken. I'm anxious to follow the process so I can absorb the experience through the forum.

Sure, the trees are normally planted after the start of the rainy season. Sometime around mid May in our area. After about a week or so, the ground is soft again and the rain lets up, you let it drain a bit and then you prepare the ground.

Usually about 8 weeks after the start of the rainy season is good, up to 12 weeks is prime.

So, mid July to mid August is the range.

You mentioned "preparing the ground". Is it more involved than just digging a hole? Do you treat the soil when some special fertilizer or planting mix? I'm under the impression that the soil is pretty rich down there.

Actually, depending where you are, the soil is either awful or pretty good. We have volcanic topsoil about 1/2 meter thick and it doesn't need much more than a little "P" to get the roots started.

We have tried various methods of planting. Teak for example hates competition, so you have to kill the grass, the natives only want a running start...

You dig a hole about 40 cm deep and 20 cm across and you are good to go.

Our soil is really remarkable - we just dug a trench to make a stream less straight, more interesting and also so it wouldn't destroy a bridge for the third time. The trench was probably 2 football fields long and it was dug using a backhole, we didn't find a single rock.

It is like working in potting soil at times.

I thought people might find this interesting. When we did our first trees, we plowed. This photo is Hector showing a working how to plant the trees.

hi all...
ok this is my first post.
i read thru the forum about a month ago and i've got a slew of questions but one at a time.
i just got some ground and i'm anxious to plant (of course : ) and i'm wondering if i've still got time this season.  i'll be planting in a corn patch that is being harvested now.  the stubble is being cut and mulched.  the rains here end in early december and i'm at 3,000 ft el where it stays green thru the dry season but it does stop raining til april/may.
any experienced guesses will be muy appreciated.
norm : ))~
