I stayed at Jaco beach for 2 nights the last visit to CR and decided I'd like to retire there as an ex-patriate. The internet does not seem to be the place for CR real estate information. When I was in Jaco, I saw some condo's that caught my eye and were within my budget. Is there a resource that the locals know about that they could steer me to?

Hi Kevin
Why didn't you ask questions when we were at Sawlex??? (Deadheader here) Jaco is pretty expensive. I'm going to the mountains. It's less expensive, and that's where the timber is.
Glad you found this place. Fred is trying to get it going, but, he's too busy making money, to keep up with the Forum.

Some of us actually are out experiencing this stuff instead of just sitting in front of a computer...

As far as the best way to go - normally just come and rent for about 6 months to a year - there is never a problem doing that. That way, if you decide it isn't for you, well, it is a lot easier to leave.
Have you seen any places other than tourist areas like Jaco?

| Yeah, well, I've been jumping through hoops, trying to get a ton of paperwork to the banks, hoping we have the closings soon. Have y'all had the sawmill meeting, yet ??

Dead-header? LogRite Pete here. What are you doing here with a diiferent name? Are you working under cover for some spy ring?
I think you were talking with neslrite (Kevin) at sawlex. Someone had to stay home and mind the store. He does almost all the traveling nowadays because his wife likes to go with him. My wife likes to stay home and think up projects that need to be done around the house.

I've only been to Jaco and San Jose. My buddy JJ has been all over CR. He owns a place down there and visits about 8 times a year.
Jaco just did something for me. I can't quite explain, but I felt at peace with the world there. I heard Quepos is also nice, just a little bit further up the road.
When I was 17, I moved to Florida and rented a beachside shack, waterfront on Daytona Beach about 1 mile from the town pier. I paid $20 a week rent and stayed for 3 months. Jaco gave me that same feeling.

Hi Pete. Yep, talked with Kevin at Sawlex. Tammy makes some gooooood Brownies.
Haven't been to Jaco, myself. Have been to Samara, farther up toward Nicaragua. Know some folks there with a little resort hotel on the beach.
You might try traveling a little more before buying the first thing you see. Lots better deals if ya take yer time looking.

Jaco has a reputation of being a little dangerous - Tamerindo has a reputation for being worse - however, if you are into beaches, there are tons, and many of them are very good.
I personally am not a beach person (probably I am too ugly) so I prefer the mountains which has scenery that is incredible.
Lot's of people vacation there - but people move to Jaco, and then move away after a while - which means you can easily find a place to rent for a while.

I saw a little bit of the seedy side around Jaco. I didn't feel like I had to do much more than lock the car. The surfers I talked to all agreed that it was a trade off for a more laid back lifestyle, and good surf.
There was a rumour that CR is improving the road to get there, so my instinct told me property values would rise when that happens. It's just a guess.

Yep, and we had a rumor here that a road would go from Ciudad Quesada to San Ramon - the plan started before I was born.
Things don't go forward here often, they go sideways!
This is not to say that it won't happen, I just won't bank on it - and I especially wouldn't bank on the airport that is supposed to happen.

| The little bit of truth to the rumour was that a nice section of road was already in place when I visited. As you said though, it will happen at CR pace, when they are good and ready.
