Im no expert, just getting started myself. However, I understand that Jatropha is not frost tolerant, in that if you get any frost at all during the year it will kill the plant. I have heard that Florida has some plantations, and im trying to see what's involved in starting one in southern california where I have 40 acres available, but so-far all I have grown is potted Jatropha. I have noted that Jatropha cannot survive the Phoenix Arizona winters though, and I imagine that Kentucky is a bit cooler than Phoenix.

If anyone is interested in working with me or providing advice and experience for my SoCal experiment, I would be more than happy to hear back from you.

I have been looking for information on Jatropha in USA. Haven't found much information on the web.

I saw some messages on another thread that there are plans to grow this in Florida and TX.

It would be nice if someone shares this information.

Well, from what I have found so-far, it appears as though most of the US is not in a climatic zone suitable to growing Jatropha. There are USDA Growing Zone maps on the web, and from what I understand, Jatropha grows best in zone 10 and 11. There are only a few areas in the US which are in those zones, Florida and some parts of CA. Notably, the locations in CA which would be best based on the growing zone maps are in expensive areas near SanDiego and LA.

I have ruled-out my Phoenix location due to known freezing which occurs in Jan/Feb. I have a 40 acre plot of desert in zone 10 in So Cal, which I would like to give a try. The difficulty has been in obtaining legal seed stock. The USDA has import restrictions and CA has quite a few rules as well. Im trying to figure out the process to get the seeds into CA legally so I won't have any issues with government.

Hi Ron,

Thanks for sharing.

Have you considered any native sources for biodiesel like switchgrass etc ?

Is Jatropha the only one gives the best yield ? any metrics on what source would give best yield ?

thanks,

Sree
