Greetings all,
I'm looking for any information, hopefully from people with Jatropha-growing experience, regarding Jatropha and any known or observed pest activity. I have recently stumbled onto the http://www.jatropha.de website, where there are photos showing jatropha attacked by at least two types of beetle, as well as ants from a small anthill formation.
Any info would be much appreciated

Herewith some links on Jatorpha and pests. Please bear in mind the link are specifically for Jatropha Curcas - other types of Jatropha do not necessarily share the same characteristics. Also please note that pests in say Nicaragua may not be applicable to a location in say west Africa, or India. Location does play a key role. In general, Jatorpha Curcas has reasonably few pests, and the ones it does have can normally be well treated by proper plantation management practices.

Just went through few sites on Jatropha Curcas Plant. There are some good websites which give complete information and guidance on cultivation.

First and second Sites mentioned by David only have basic information. Third one is under construction. I found that the following site is very useful in giving detailed info.

In Indonesia, the jatropha proponents were going too far by advocating that jatropha has no pests at all. That occurred early in 2006. Now they seemed to be very quiet on this.

Dear All ....,
Type of disesases and pests can be differences in one area from another. In Indonesia, the diseases and pests found in jatrophas which is intercroped with other food crops, such as corns, green beans, soy bean etc are limited or not significant. May be because pests like to attack food crops rather than jatropha, which contains toxin.
However if the jatropha is planted in monoculture system, it can potentially grows the deseases and pests. As described in book "Jatropha, the biodiesel producing fruits" by team of jatropha experts from Bogor Agricultural Institute and Bandung Technical Institute.
To mention some of the pests are :- Agrotis Ipsilon
- Scarabaeid
- Valanga spp
- Locusta Migratoria
- Spodoptera Litura
- Ostrinia Furnacalis
- Xyleborus spp
- Achaea Janata
- Parasa Lepida
- Empoasca sp
- Tetranychus sp
- Helicoperva Armigera
- Nezara Viridula
- Chrysocorys Javanus
- Dischocrosys Punctiferalis
Some of the deseases are :- Spot on the young leaves, happend during rainy season on bad irrigation system.
- Alternaria Ricini.
- Melampsora Ricini.
- Cercospora Ricinella.
- Fusarium Oxysporum.
- Borytis Ricini.
- Xanthomonas Ricinicola.
So .. it seems not easy to grow jatropha in monoculture system. I read a recommendation that jatropha to be intercroped with other food crop, such as corns, green bean and soy bean or other food crops, but the height of the intercrops should not be higher than the height of jatropha, because jatropha requires full sun light.
Regards,
