I am currently a senior at Columbia University who is working on a design project to run a lister engine using jatropha oil (not purified bio-diesel fuel).  I was wondering if anyone knows of any source for jatropha seeds and plants so that I can press them myself.  Because I am doing this at school, this is kind of time sensitive so I probably wouldnt have the time to bring them through US customs.  Is there any company which imports Jatropha curcus into the US or grows it in the US?  Any leads would be greatly appreciated.

Hi farmers,

I recently purchased some Jatropha Seeds from India. These seeds are of Hybrid Variety and resulted in 87 % germination. The saplings are 1.5 ft now and I have now shifted them into the land. I have also tried seeds from some other countries but the seeds from India are the best ones available in the market. You can more details on Jatropha Seeds by visiting any of the following websites:

I would be interested in hearing more about import procedures and eventual problems. I can imagine that it is possible to import, but plant import restrictions in the US are stiff and the USDA could create quite some problems. Could you tell us about your experience?

I also would make you aware of an alternative fuel conversion method besides biodiesel, which I found. Look at
http://www.energy-visions.com and
http://www.energy-visions.com/FE_munisolid.htm
It looks that these guys can facilitate the process substantially, as they can process the whole plant (biomass), not only the oil, which would make the costly pressing process obsolete. Just shredding should be enough.
So if you can believe their figures, the calculation should look as follows. 7 metric tons per hectar convert to about 2.5 short tons per acre.
One acre yields about 200 gallons of raw oil, which converts into about 180 gallons of light oil or 'KDV diesel' (no glycerol!!).
Lets say there remain about 2.2 short tons (2000 kg) of press cake (biomass), which they say converts at about 40% weight. At a specific weight of 0,86 it would mean that on top of the production from the oil and additional 930 liters or 245 gallons could be produced.
In total the yield would be 425 gallons/acre compared to 180 gallons or more than 2.4 times higher than from biodiesel! I think this would be worth a thought.:D
We are planning to harvest energy plants on tribal land, so we are sincerely looking into this.

Hi Sir:

I read your submission and was curious.  Jatropha growing conditions note that they can stand only a light frosting.  That is very vague.  What has been your experience to date with both the germination conditions and the current planting condidtions?

Dear Diesel Friend,

For sure, Glycerin should remove or dispose if the output for BDF.  This process reduce volume and rise the BDF Production cost from PPO (Pure Plant Oil-Jatropha Curcas Oil).

We had additive product which we skip Glycerin removal process without any volume reduction.

Jatropha seed are planting in Indonesia around October 2006. So..harvesting period will be this October 2007.

Dear Wendy,

Yes...I am able to provide you with Jatropha Seed for Plant. Actually the price depend on the quality of seeds for plant.  Its price at variable price.  Is there any term of buying you like to use ? FOB or CIF ? and Other Terms.

Actually, which part of USA you had this 7000 Acre ? West, East or Gulf ? This Jatropha will be better to plant it at soil land.  The condition of lands influence the quality and quantity of the Jatropha Oil on the seeds.

I will give you the general literature of Jatropha Plantation which I got from Bogor University of Agriculture as attach seperate and directly to your email.

Let me know when you able to have Yahoo Messanger at what time at you side it will be.

Thanks,

Khrisna
