LONDON, Jan. 6 (UPI) — British residents faced another day of travel snarls, closed schools and office absences Wednesday as snow continued to fall across Great Britain.
Meteorologists said more than a foot of new snow had piled up in the Surrey area by dawn as the storm system spread from Scotland down to southern England.
London’s weather was causing air travel delays at Heathrow airport and closed down Gatwick, the BBC reported. Rail travel was delayed in many areas and the military was called out Tuesday night to help stranded motorists on the A3 in Hampshire.
The ripple effect of the storm was being felt across the economy in the form of workers hunkering down at home. The BBC said a snap poll by a U.K. employment law firm concluded that 44 percent of British workers had failed to make it to the office this week.
