CAPE TOWN, South Africa, Oct. 5 (UPI) — A group of at least 103 surfers set a world record in South Africa by riding the same wave at the same time, organizers said.
Paul Botha of Kahuna Promotions, sponsors of the Earthwave beach festival, said the record attempt during the Cape Town event beat the previous Guinness World Record of 100 surfers on a single wave, which was set at a previous Earthwave festival held in Brazil, The Daily Telegraph reported Monday.
“We estimated that there were more than 120 surfers on the fifth of the seven waves surfed at Muizenberg during Earthwave,” Botha said. “However, the photographic evidence we have so far shows that there were 103 on the same wave, which is enough to overtake the record.”
“We are still waiting for more images and video footage that we will submit to the Guinness World Record organization in London to have the record ratified,” he said.
