SAN DIEGO, Nov. 18 (UPI) — San Diego’s newest baby panda was officially named Yun Zi, which is Chinese for “son of cloud,” the San Diego Zoo announced.
The name was selected by 28 percent of the more than 17,500 participants who voted in an online poll.
Yun Zi was born 100 days ago. Under Chinese tradition, panda cubs aren’t given a permanent name until that period has passed.
The San Diego Union-Tribune said Wednesday the enthusiasm appeared to be generated in large part by the Webcam installed in the panda enclosure.
“People from all these other countries are writing in and talking about this little bear,” said Becky Hilburn, a contributor to the zoo’s public-relations blog. “Everybody kind of likes everybody, and there’s no animosity.”
Yun Zi has been thriving. The zoo said in a written statement the baby panda had recently cut its first teeth and was starting to walk.
