Cincinnati Zoo's Two Prized Manatees Arrive in Florida Safely

CINCINNATI, Oct. 18 (UPI) — A spokesman for the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden said the zoo’s two prized manatees arrived safely to a zoo in Tampa, Fla.

Zoo spokesman Chad Yelton told The Cincinnati Enquirer that Slip and Lil’ Joe arrived at the Lowry Park Zoo Saturday as part of a plan through which the manatees will eventually be released into the wild as part of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Services Manatee Rescue, Rehabilitation and Release program.

The manatees departed Cincinnati early Saturday afternoon and were transported on a Boeing 767 Freighter to Tampa. The animals were then transported to David A. Straz Jr. Manatee Hospital.

The Enquirer said Slip and Lil’ Joe will spend several months at the Lowry Park Zoo before being released.
