BURLEY, Idaho, Nov. 24 (UPI) — An Idaho man said hundreds of thousands of bees will likely die after 64 hives fell from the back of a trailer and onto a roadway.
Bert Belliston, owner of the bees and Belliston Brothers Apiaries Inc., said the bees were being transported from Declo to Murtaugh for winter storage when a cargo strap on the trailer came loose in Burley and allowed the hives to spill onto the road, The Twin Falls (Idaho) Times-News reported Tuesday.
“One of the straps slipped and the whole load tipped over,” Belliston said.
He said each of the hives contained about 30,000 bees and about 90 percent of the equipment was destroyed by falling from the vehicle. He said the bees that could not be recovered will die due to sluggishness from the cold.
Belliston said the losses do not represent a large portion of his business, which owns 4,070 hives.
